Launched in 1977 in order to 'discover and develop new movie talent', the Pia Film Festival sees independent movies compete for PFF Awards, while the Invitational Selection features valuable work from both Japan and abroad. For the latter, this year's edition shines the spotlight on domestic indie flicks from the golden era of punk with the 'Hachimiri Madness' programme, which includes films by the likes of Sion Sono, Gakuryu Ishii and Shinya Tsukamoto. Meanwhile, the competition programme includes shorts by up-and-coming directors from all over the country – check out the full list here (in Japanese only).
