This could almost be a template for the perfect rustic izakaya – rough-hewn wooden tables; tatami floored attic; sake galore; a smoky, bouncy atmosphere and first-rate Japanese pub grub – except the walls are covered in posters for the Ramones and the Sex Pistols, and the music is usually Japanese rock or punk. If that sounds intolerable, it’s not. Tachimichiya is a great izakaya that happens to rock. Even famed artist Yoshitomo Nara is a fan – head for the tables towards the back of the main floor to check the illustrations that he left (pictured).
