Sitting pretty on the top of Mount Atago, the highest natural point within the 23 wards, Atago Shrine is most famed for its 86-step stone staircase. This monster is also known as the 'Staircase to Promotion' (shusse no ishidan) and was once climbed on horseback by Magaki Heikuro, an Edo-era samurai who was looking to impress then-shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu.
