Tokyo National Museum is now hosting Japan's first exhibition dedicated to the treasures of Kyoto's Tofuku-ji Zen temple. Established during the Kamakura period, the temple is renowned for its stunning spring foliage and autumn hues.
This exhibition provides a rare opportunity to see the temple's remarkable treasures in one place, including Minchō's Five Hundred Arhats, an iconic Buddhist painting displayed in its entirety for the first time since restoration work was completed.
Alongside the painting, visitors can marvel at various cultural properties that survived the Onin War (1467-1477), including paintings, calligraphy, and monumental Buddhist sculptures. Delve into the temple's rich history and learn about its enduring cultural significance in Japan, with a glimpse into the flourishing Zen culture that bloomed through exchanges with the rest of Asia.
