Shunsuke Imai's solo exhibition, originally held at the Marugame Genichiro Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art in Kagawa, is now set to move to the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery. Imai is well-known for his paintings featuring vibrantly coloured stripes that straddle the lines between figurative and abstract art.
This showcase highlights some of his latest works that are reminiscent of waving flags, with a colour-popping palette and Imai's dynamic brushstrokes. The inspiration for these paintings came from the movement and patterns of swaying skirts designed by major retailers, hence the title of the exhibition. By examining the fundamental elements of paintings, like colour, shape, and dimensionality, Imai's vivid canvases define the potential of two-dimensional artworks.
