Paula Scher is one of the most influential graphic designers in the world. Her works are often described as whimsical, iconic, smart and accessible. The title ‘Serious Play’ refers to the process of her work cycle, which starts from ‘serious’ to ‘solemn’, ‘hackneyed’, ‘extremely bored’ and finally ‘rediscovered’.
Scher recognises that most of the best works come from ‘serious play’ and draws a clear distinction between ‘serious play’ and ‘solemn play’. The exhibition presents important paintings and screenprints, including 16 works from her ‘Map’ series that she has been working on for the last 20 years.
