Upon completing his studies at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1979, Minoru Nomata began his professional journey as an art director at the renowned advertising agency McCann Erickson Hakuhodo. Though he sporadically held solo exhibitions throughout Japan, for years, only a select group of connoisseurs cherished his distinctive artistry. However, when Nomata transitioned to focus entirely on his independent creations, he swiftly captivated a broader audience. In recent years, his influence has notably expanded overseas, culminating in an affiliation with the UK's renowned White Cube gallery.
Spanning the expansive galleries one and two, this exhibition charts the remarkable trajectory of Nomata's craft. Thanks to generous denotations by art collector Terada Kotaro, over 40 of Minoru's works are on display, tracing back to his 1986 debut at Tokyo's Sagacho Exhibit Space and highlighting his ascent to international recognition.
Nomata's portfolio ranges from colossal structures that marry nature and design to the emotive 'Skyglow' series and the reflective 'Square Drawing' following the Great East Japan Earthquake. They all weave a narrative of human endeavour, the overwhelming power of nature, and a yearning for a time when humanity was deeply rooted to the Earth.
