These cutesy creations all have one thing in common – they were handmade by mothers across Japan. Far from being everyday trinkets by amateur hobbyists, however, these crafts were painstakingly selected and curated by writer and editor Kyoichi Tsuzuki, who scoured different parts of Japan for pieces that demonstrated skill and individuality in equal measure.
There are a staggering 1,000 pieces showcased here, with artworks ranging from tiny outfits for thumb sized Kewpie dolls to a collection of origami handbags fashioned from newspaper. They’re not the kind of works you’d ordinarily come across in a museum or gallery and that’s exactly what makes this exhibition all the more extraordinary.
