American artist Elizabeth Peyton shot to fame in the early 1990s with her portraits of subjects like Jarvis Cocker, Kurt Cobain and Napoleon Bonaparte, and now presents her first solo show in Japan. 'Still Life' at the Hara Museum consists of 40 works picked out by the artist herself and includes pieces from genres such as painting, drawing and printmaking. Drawing on both history and celebrity, with references to Greek mythology and 19th-century France, her self-aware style may not be for everyone but certainly does challenge the viewer.
