Returning to Japan with a large-scale exhibition this summer, New York-based Chinese contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang has earned plenty of international recognition since taking his talent to the Big Apple in 1995. The showcase – co-sponsored by The National Art Center, Tokyo and Saint Laurent – features a selection of works from Cai's early career in China, his formative years in Japan, and his subsequent time in the United States, effectively tracing his ascent onto the world stage.
The 2,000sqm 1E gallery will house Cai's historic screen painting installation 'Primeval Fireball', complemented by his kinetic LED installation 'Encounter with the Unknown'.
The exhibition, which features about fifty works from major Japanese art museums and the artist's personal collection, captures Cai's exploration of harmony and connections between Eastern and Western philosophies. Through both established and new pieces created exclusively for this showcase, you'll get to experience Cai's dialogue with the universe and ponder upon his reflections on contemporary social issues, symbolised through his novel gunpowder technique.
