Art Fair Tokyo began in 2005 and has since become one of Asia's largest and most significant art markets. Held annually in March at the Tokyo International Forum, it features a diverse range of artwork and genres, including painting, sculpture, photography and digital art, from local and international artists. This year's event, which marks its 18th edition, will feature 156 exhibitors ranging from local galleries to international powerhouses.
Among the featured exhibitors this year is Perrotin Gallery, spotlighting American artist Nick Doyle and his 'American Blues' series. From Australia, the N. Smith Gallery brings a mix of artists including Claire Healy & Sean Cordeiro, Danie Mellor and Casey Chen to the Tokyo audience. Meanwhile, Hong Kong-based Pearl Lam Galleries presents a diverse lineup including Filipino painter Jana Benitez, the dynamic Mr Doodle (Sam Cox) and Nigerian portrait artist Babajide Olatunji.
Art fairs like this are generally geared towards commercial art galleries, dealers, curators and collectors. As such, it also functions as a networking event for those involved in the commercial art market. In the past, the fair also showcased established names such as Julian Opie and Kaws. Nevertheless, this is the time and place to discover new and emerging artists.
