Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) was a Czech artist best known for his distinctive style of decorative art, which was hugely influential in the development of Art Nouveau in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Born in the town of Ivančice in Moravia (now part of the Czech Republic), Mucha began his artistic career as a young man, working as an apprentice in a theatre scene-painting workshop in Vienna. He later moved to Paris, where he gained fame as a poster artist, creating iconic images for such clients as the actress Sarah Bernhardt and the champagne company Moët & Chandon.
This exhibition will feature over 400 of Mucha’s works, ranging from his poster work to illustrations incorporating themes from Slavic folklore and mythology.
