The earlier half of the week can be quite the drag, can’t it? Coming off the high of the weekend, Mondays usually signal the start of the work week and responsibility, putting off your social life until Friday rolls around. Luckily, this cocktail class is here to shake up your routine.

Starting March 3, Time Out Market New York is introducing Mixology Mondays. Every Monday starting at 7pm, the downstairs bar, The Local Corner Bar, will welcome the thirsty to the bar for a one-of-a-kind cocktail class. There, attendees can learn how to recreate the classics and create (and sip on!) signature drinks.

Mixologist Johnathan Williams, a veteran with over 15 years experience tending bar, will teach budding bartenders and drinking devotees Cocktail-making 101 with industry tips along the way.

We caught up with Williams to learn about his career, his favorite bartending tricks and what’s currently shaking in his world ahead of the first class.

You’ve worked in the beverage industry for over 15 years. What brought you to the profession in the first place?

Jonathan Williams: “Once upon a time when I was pursuing my acting career,  I needed a flexible job that allowed me the time to audition during the day, and work in the evenings, all while making enough money to survive.”

Where did you get your start?

JW:My first bartending gig was at an Italian restaurant named The 3 Olives, located in the corner of a strip mall in the suburbs of Chicago. I would drive an hour from home and sit in traffic for an additional hour, just to make $80 a night. Although I didn't make much money, this is where I learned the basics and built my foundation.”

Any notable bars you’ve worked with in the past?

JW: “Throughout my career I have had the pleasure of working in many bars and restaurants in NYC, Chicago, Indiana and Jersey City. The two most notable places were in New York City: Southern Hospitality BBQ, once backed by Justin Timberlake, a Memphis-style barbecue joint that was located in the heart of Hell's Kitchen; [and] The Hunt & Fish Club NYC, a posh, two-floor Times Square restaurant serving steak, seafood and other high-end American food and beverages.”

What is something you think people get wrong about the bartending profession?

JW: “I think there is a common misconception that bartending isn't a legitimate career, that it's filled with alcoholics and involves easy, unskilled work that doesn't demand the same level of respect. In reality, bartending requires a unique blend of hospitality, creativity and technical skill, along with strong interpersonal and time management abilities.”

Starting in March, you will lead Mixology Mondays at Time Out Market. What can people expect to learn from your class?

JW: “People can expect to learn the fundamental techniques of crafting cocktails, from mastering classic recipes to exploring modern creations. Along the way, they'll also gain a deeper appreciation for the rich history and vibrant culture of mixology, understanding not just how to make a great drink, but the stories and traditions that inspire each one.”

What is an ingredient or technique that you like incorporating in your cocktails?

JW: “I love to shake things up—literally. Using cocktail shakers is one of my favorite parts of bartending, it brings me so much joy shaking a drink to the rhythm of the music. I also enjoy adding a personal touch to specialty cocktails by incorporating homemade syrups, which serve as my secret ingredient to elevate each creation.”

Any tips for budding bartenders out there?

JW: “My advice to anyone aspiring to become a bartender is to start by becoming a student of the profession. Take the time to learn the craft, understand the nuances of mixology and appreciate the artistry. Most importantly, ensure that you genuinely enjoy serving others, as hospitality is at the heart of this profession.”

Mixology Mondays will be held at Time Out Market every Monday starting March 3. Classes include creating three drinks and a charcuterie board. Classes are priced at $60 per person, sign up here
