Time flies when you’re having fun, so they say. And it’s certainly been a rollicking good year for Time Out Market Cape Town, which celebrated its first birthday on November 17, 2024.

In November 2023, Cape Town became the first city in Africa to host a Time Out Market, a global collection of nine Markets that today stretches from the Lisbon original to Dubai to Chicago… and with Bahrain, Osaka and Vancouver in the pipeline. Each Market brings the best of a city under a single roof. In Cape Town, this meant 13 of the city’s most talented chefs, offering a culinary cross-section of Cape cuisine alongside fine wines and craft beers.

There was Peter Tempelhoff and Ashley Moss at Ramenhead. Giorgio Nava at CARNE. Anwar Abdullatief at Barakat. John van Zyl at The Melting Pot. Vusi Ndlovu at Mlilo. And so many more established and ascendant chefs who offer a true taste of the Mother City to tourists and locals alike.

Alongside the everyday foodie adventures, the Market has also become a hub for great events. Every week The Studio, upstairs at Time Out Market Cape Town, hosts comedy and live music, swing dance sessions, and hugely popular quiz nights.

The Winter Wine Series was a roaring success, as wine-loving locals escaped the winter with an afternoon swirling and sipping their way across the Cape. As winter (finally!) released its grip the Time Out Market Beer Project 2024 swopped merlot for malted barley, introducing punters to a dozen craft breweries from across the Cape.

While Time Out Market Cape Town is proudly local, it’s also global in ambition. Tapping into the wealth of culinary talent across the nine global Markets, Cape Town was selected to host the fourth in the series of ‘Chefs on Tour’ events.

It’s a simple concept: one Market chef travels to a different Time Out Market to collaborate with the host chef in that city. Working together the chefs create an exclusive one-off multi-course menu that showcases their combined talents and fuses their creativity and signature cuisines. It’s served up to a handful of diners lucky enough to book one of the extremely limited seats at a special collaborative chef’s table dinner in the host Market. The host chef then follows suit by travelling to the next Market to collaborate with a new Market chef in that city.

May 2024 saw Chef Paul Toussaint – from Time Out Market Montreal – fly in to the Mother City for an exciting collaboration with Chef John van Zyl of The Melting Pot, and the pair hosted a unique fine dining experience for one-night only. The result? A memorable evening of fine food and inspired drink pairings, all dished up in the buzz and bustle of Time Out Market Cape Town.

Turning the crystal ball to 2025, hungry locals and curious visitors can look forward to some of the best food, wine, cocktails and music Cape Town has to offer… all under a single roof in one convenient destination in V&A Waterfront. There are some exciting plans afoot, so watch this space!
