With temperatures starting to dip in Austin, now’s the best time to jet-set to cozier (and warmer) environs. From dozens of domestic to international departures out of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, the opportunities to relax are endless. In under four hours, you could find yourself soaking up the sun in Los Angeles, or, if an international getaway is calling, Cabo San Lucas is just a quick three-hour flight away. Prefer to stay closer to home? Texas offers plenty of destinations within a reasonable drive.

Wherever you’re wishing to go or itching to do, here are the best getaways from Austin.

Getaways within Texas

Fredericksburg

1 hr 37 mins by car

Austinites don’t need to fly to California to experience great wine—Fredericksburg is just around the corner. A quick hour-and-a-half drive will take you to the fifth largest wine-producing region in the U.S., home to over 75 wineries, vineyards and tasting rooms

What to do: A wine tasting is a no brainer when visiting. Stop at Becker Vineyards to sample six pre-selected wines in a barrel room, or head down the road to William Chris Vineyards for a 45-minute Winemaker’s Tasting to learn about Texas grape farmers and winemakers with views of the Texas Hill Country as your backdrop. You can’t go wrong with either!

Where to stay: The Trueheart Hotel feels like a home away from home, with comfy beds, limestone fireplaces, cowboy decor and freshly baked biscuits in the morning. Centrally located in the city, this boutique hotel is just a skip away from the city’s best restaurants, wineries and shops. Suites and cottages are available to rent starting at $285 per night.

If a luxury hotel is more of your forte, consider the newly-opened Albert Hotel. It boasts 105 guest rooms with custom design furniture, four restaurants, a full-service spa, a pool and two bars. With so much to do, you might reconsider even leaving.

San Antonio

1 hr and 30 mins by car

The culinary capital of Texas is a must-visit for its gastronomy alone, but there’s also plenty to see and do. Walk off your meal at the iconic River Walk, or head to the city’s museum of art to witness more than 5,000 years of global art. Given its proximity to Austin, San Antonio makes for the perfect day or weekend trip.

What to do: For a culinary adventure, visit San Antonio’s Pearl District; it’s home to chef-led restaurants and locally owned storefronts for a fun day of shopping and eating. Isidore, which won Time Out’s Best New Restaurant of 2024, is a must-visit for a night of fine dining and a meal as diverse as Texas’ bounty.

Where to stay: If luxury is what you seek, you can’t go wrong with Hotel Emma—which is centrally located in the Pearl District. Thompson San Antonio is another great option for those looking to explore the city; it’s near the historic Alamo, San Antonio Museum of Art and more.

Waco

1 hr and 39 mins by car

Waco may have a college-town vibe thanks to Beylor University, but it also exudes charming small-town energy. Known as the birthplace of Dr. Pepper and home to the Waco Mammoth National Monument, the city offers plenty for history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Nestled along the Brazos River, Waco is perfect for a day trip or a laid-back weekend getaway.

What to do: Discover where the iconic soft drink all began, make your own unique soft drink and blind taste test the brand's signature flavors at the Dr. Pepper Museum. Afterwards, head to Magnolia Market to shop new collections of home decor, branded apparel and unique keepsakes. You’re going to wish you brought a bigger luggage.

Where to stay: Located in the heart of Waco is stunning boutique Hotel Herringbone. The design-forward property features colorful monochromatic bathrooms, mid-century furniture and art deco design details that are sure to wow. Even more impressive? Complimentary craft coffee service every morning and happy hour each evening to start and end your day right.

Out-of-state getaways

New Orleans

1 hr and 20 mins by plane

If you’re planning to do an out-of-state trip, why not make it to New Orleans? This vibrant city boasts a thriving live music scene, historic architecture and food festivals worth drooling over. Need I say more?

What to do: Grab beignets at local- and tourist-favorite Cafe du Monde. You might find long lines, but the fluffy, square doughnuts topped off with powdered sugar will make you forget the wait. After indulging in sweet treats, head to one of the many museums, including New Orleans Museum of Art and the National WWII Museum

Where to stay: Location-wise, Kimpton Hotel Fontenot takes the cake, as it’s within walking distance to the convention center, Mercedes-Benz Superdome and street cars. You also can’t go wrong with Virgin Hotels New Orleans, a swanky spot that pays attention to the little details and the customer experience. The rooms are everything, might I add.

Las Vegas

3 hrs and 6 mins by plane

If your getaway beckons for a change in scenery, Las Vegas promises larger-than-life shows, opulent casinos and top-notch buffets with lobster, steaks and a caviar bar.

What to do: Walk the Las Vegas Strip to marvel at themed hotels, or catch a fountain show at the Bellagio to watch 1,000 fountains shoot water that synchronizes to music. When night falls, catch the Cirque du Soleil; it’s worth every penny.

Where to stay: When in Vegas, book the luxury stay at The Venetian, where you can enjoy spacious suites, gondola rides and Michelin-starred dining.

Los Angeles

3 hrs and 30 mins by plane

With mostly dry to mild and hot temperatures year-round, Los Angeles is a standout destination for those looking to escape the Texas freeze. The city boasts a vibrant culinary scene, a wide range of museums and plenty of shopping and outdoor activities, so you’ll have plenty to do.

What to do: For art enthusiasts, head to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). See Chris Burden’s 202 cast-iron street lamps, but stay for the museum’s collection of over 150,000 works, making it the largest museum in the western U.S. The Broad, which houses Yayoi Kusama’s beloved Infinity Mirrored Room, is another must-see when you’re in town.

Where to stay: L.A. is brimming with hotels to suit every style and budget. If you’re looking to stay downtown, Hotel Figueroa is just steps away from the L.A. Convention Center and Crypto.com Arena and a short drive to Koreatown.

International getaways

Mexico

2 hrs and 39 mins to Mexico City by plane

2 hrs and 40 mins to Riviera Maya by plane

2 hrs and 45 mins to Cabos San Lucas by plane

Given Texas’ proximity to Mexico, an international getaway is definitely within arm’s reach. A long weekend will give you enough time to indulge in Mexico’s world-renowned cuisine, soak up the sun on picturesque beaches and learn about the country’s rich culture. From Austin, there are several non-stop flights to various cities in Mexico, including Mexico City, Riviera Maya and Cabos San Lucas.

What to do: A trip to Mexico City warrants a visit to Panadería Rosetta for quality-made pan dulces, from conchas to scones and cakes. Afterwards, hit up Palacio de Bellas Artes for performing arts events; however, the exterior architecture—designed by Adamo Boari—is worth the trip on its own.

Where to stay: A Mexican-owned, AAA Five Diamond-awarded Grand Velas resorts are top-tier options with locations just a short flight from Austin: Los Cabos and Riviera Maya. Both properties boast Michelin-starred dining, breathtaking views of turquoise waters and endless activities like whale watching and snorkeling. For ultimate relaxation, don’t miss the water ceremony—a seven step hydrotherapy treatment designed to relieve muscle tension—or indulge in spa offerings inspired by traditional Mayan practices. The Bacal massage, for instance, uses corn, one of the Mayans' most sacred crops, to melt away stress.

Belize

4 hrs 48 mins to Belize City by plane

From its lush rainforests to its cultural sites, Belize is wrapped in natural beauty. It’s home to a bevy of wildlife, ancient Mayan archeological sites, delicious food and the world’s second largest barrier reef, making it a top spot for snorkeling, scuba diving and outdoor travelers.

What to do: Touted as one of the world’s most sacred caves, Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM Cave) is a must-see in San Ignacio, Cayo District. The cave is considered a treasure trove by archaeologists for its Mayan relics, including ceramics, stoneware and, yes, skeletons. It’s also a great place to spot wildlife, from bats to crabs and tropical fish. Guides provide helmets and lamps, but packing water shoes and a bathing suit are highly recommended. Trust us, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss.

Where to stay: If you’ve ever fancied staying in a treehouse, Muy’Ono Resort’s Sweet Songs Jungle Lodge takes things to the next level. Tucked along the Macal River and surrounded by lush tropical forest, this serene retreat feels worlds away from everyday life. When you’re not exploring caves or zip lining, enjoy farm-to-table meals at the on-site restaurant, relax poolside or take in the canopy views from your private treehouse.
