Looking for a bit of fresh air and greenery after exploring the Launceston CBD? Make tracks to the Cataract Gorge Reserve, located just a brisk 15-minute walk outside of the city centre. The Gorge, as it's called by locals, refers to the two cliff faces flanking the winding South Esk River, which eventually joins with the Tamar.
Visitors can choose between two walking tracks: the Cataract Walk is level and easier for beginners, while the Zig Zag Track is steep and designed for more advanced hikers. If you're not much of a hiker, you can opt (or walk – but be warned, the streets are also steep) to drive up to the First Basin car park where you can hop on the scenic chairlift. It spans 457 metres from station to station, and the ten-minute ride offers spectacular views of the Gorge from above. After riding across, you can immediately hop back on to return to the car park. If you're lucky, you might spot some of the resident peacocks or a family of wallabies.
Near the chairlift, you'll also find the Gorge restaurant where you can enjoy outdoor alfresco dining in the warmer months and a meal by the fireplace during the cooler months. For grab-and-go sandwiches, snacks and beverages, you can also pop by the Gorge Kiosk or the Basin Cafe.
If you or a member of your party is mobility challenged, there is an inclinator available to use, free of charge. An inclinator is a mechanised people mover that features a compartment capable of carrying up to eight people, including wheelchair users. The route takes visitors on a smooth and slow journey from the entrance to the lawn area below.
