It’s the second official Women’s March in Sydney, which drew 10,000 people together last year. This year’s march will begin in Hyde Park at 11.30am, where local ambassadors for the #WomensWave will call attention to Australia’s national crisis of gender-based violence.
This year’s MC is Yumi Stynes (host of Is Australia Sexist?) and attendees will hear from author Bri Lee (Eggshell Skull); journalist Rae Johnston (Junkee); activist Bhenji Ra; Labor’s candidate for Newtown, Aunty Norma Ingram; and Jane Brock from Immigrant Women’s Speakout and 1 Billion Rising.
Thousands of supporters are expected to join the walk through the CBD, which will finish with a fair, including performances by Body Type, Des Fleurs and Malaika Green, at Belmore Park at 3pm.
Marches are taking place around the world, including ones confirmed in London, Stockholm, Rome, Barcelona and Canada. The first Women’s March, two years ago, saw 5 million women and allies join marches across the world.
Women’s March Sydney are calling on Sydneysiders to join the event to demand action by the Australian government to address gender-based violence with immediate and definitive action. They’ve joined the NSW Women’s Alliance and Domestic Violence NSW to officially support the Safe State Initiative. The Alliance backs 49 comprehensive recommendations to address family and sexual violence in NSW.
