Whether you’re new to the city or a seasoned local, there are so many places to celebrate Sydney Mardi Gras in 2024. From February 16 until March 3, the Harbour City will be lighting up with engaging community events, glitzy dance parties, theatre, music and the huge Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday, March 2.

This year is set to be one of the most jam-packed events yet, and the precincts are all supported by the NSW Government's 24-Hour Economy Commissioner’s Uptown Program.

Many folks will be familiar with the exciting Oxford Street atmosphere that ignites every year for the Mardi Gras Parade. Starting at Hyde Park and going all the way to Taylor Square, this iconic route sees thousands of rainbow-clad Sydneysiders watch in awe at the legendary parade that first began in 1978.

Aside from the parade being one Oxford Street’s biggest drawcards, there will also be two weeks of entertainment leading up to the big event. Oxtravaganza is Darlinghurst’s very own fringe festival, with drag shows, cabaret, sweaty disco nights and even a cheeky nude drawing class for those so inclined.

Kicking off on February 24, Darlo will be filled to the brim with fun and exciting activities. For the boozers, there is a drag brunch, while families can enjoy drag story time, face painting and crafts.

Just a few blocks away from Oxford Street is Hollywood Quarter, a Surry Hills micro-precinct bordered by Darlinghurst and Central Station. If you’re just visiting for Mardi Gras, it’s a great base to be close to the action. Paramount House Hotel and ACE Hotel Sydney are our top picks for a comfortable staycation in the heart of Sydney. Plus, head up to Kiln restaurant on the 18th floor of ACE, or party in the lobby bar with guest DJs and a regular Heaps Gay residency.

Kings Cross Quarter

Party on into the night at Kings Cross Quarter, where you’ll find iconic clubs like LaDiDarts, Cult, Sussudio, Flamingos and Kings Cross Hotel (which turns into Queens Cross Hotel every Mardi Gras). For the last five years, the landmark Queens Cross Hotel has played host to plenty of parties and events to coincide with all the Mardi Gras madness. Try drag bingo, lip sync battles and boogie ‘til your heart’s content at this King’s Cross staple.

Or for the more low key patrons, discover the hidden gems in the backstreets of Kings Cross, like Dulcie’s, Caravin, Dean’s Lounge and Piccolo Bar.
