Each year the Western Walers (musicians and comedians) and the Sydney Sailors (media personalities) come together at Henson Park to kick a ball and raise some dosh. It’s now the eighth year of the Sydney Community Cup and the charity AFL match isn’t just about the footy. There’s live music on the main stage, snacks on the sidelines and Sydney Swans running activities for the kids.
This year, Sydney rock band Polish Club are playing at full time and you can catch Nick Nuisance and the Delinquents at half time. Take a picnic blanket and find a spot on the grass with the 2,000-or-so other attendees egging on the red-, black-and-yellows or the red-and-whites.
All funds raised from the day go to the Reclink charity that supports people experiencing mental illness, disability, homelessness, addiction, social and economic hardship.
Look out for MP Anthony Albanese on the pitch, donning a Walers jersey. And bring enough change for the food stalls from Fired Up BBQ, Vejoes and Serendipity Ice Cream.
It’s an inclusive space, and pets are also encouraged.
