Sustainability advocacy group and global women’s environmental movement 1 Million Women will be teaching Sydney how to lead environmentally-friendly lives at Carriageworks on May 25. They’ve organised a huge roster of talks and demonstrations by local carbon-conscious businesses, zero-wasters and leaders in the fight to curb climate change. There’ll also be a marketplace offering sustainable goods and live music to get the green party going.
On the day, you’ll be learning about how climate change is impacting communities today, as president of the Marshall Islands Hilda Heine and Costa Rica’s vice minister of foreign affairs Lorena Aguilar talk on how women in particular are being affected by ecological changes. You’ll also hear from speakers advocating for zero-waste living like Craige Russel from the ABC’s War on Waste, the author of Waste Not Erin Rhodes, and model and ocean conservationist Laura Wells.
You can hear about the efforts of 1 Million Women from the organisation’s founder Natalie Isaacs before watching demos in how to construct an apartment worm farm, or how to pickle your way to zero-waste meals with Marrickville’s Cornersmith team. Then, seek out sustainable food and products at the marketplace.
The official program will finish with live performances, by Groote Eylandt-born, Brisbane-based artist Emily Wurramara singing in Anindilyakwa and English, beside Aria Award-winning singer-songwriter, Katie Noonan
