Mr Wong executive chef – creator of the OG cheeseburger spring rolls and one of Sydney’s most talented chefs – Dan Hong, along with Crazy Rich Asians star Remy Hii, will together host a Mahjong Club soirée to celebrate Lunar New Year. For one-day-only, guests will be able to try their luck at mahjong – a fast-paced tile game that’s significant in Chinese culture – while getting stuck into a feast cooked by Hong, accompanied by Johnnie Walker Blue Label-infused cocktails. Ready to play? We sure are.
Hong’s special Lunar New Year-inspired line-up features delicious numbers like crab and scallop potsticker dumplings; rock lobster bao with ginger and shallot; prawn toast with bluefin tuna belly and finger lime; hot and numbing Wagyu skewers; chilled truffle noodles with caviar; and finishes with a Hong Kong-style warm egg tart. Crucially, Hong has designed each dish to be eaten by hand, so you can keep your head (and spare hand) in the game.
Scotch whisky lovers are in luck, as Merivale mixologist Jonathan Liu has created three cocktails for you to choose from on the night, all of which feature Johnnie Walker Blue Label. There's the ‘Hi-Prosperity’, a highball with notes of ginger, yuzu, and chrysanthemum; ‘Blue Wishes’ with apple, rose honey and Champagne; and ‘Peace and Peaches’ with coconut milk, peach and pandan.
Hong said: “I have vivid memories of growing up watching my friend’s mum play mahjong and spending Lunar New Year with my family, surrounded by food. The menu I’ve created for the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Mahjong Club pays homage to those memories and traditions.”
The Johnnie Walker Blue Label Mahjong Club will be held at Establishment in Sydney’s CBD, with the grand space transformed to showcase contemporary Chinese design. Bring in The Year of the Wood Dragon at the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Mahjong Club, held on Saturday, February 17, with tickets costing $175 per person. There’s also a cocktail and snack option for $63 per person. You can snap up tickets here.
