Sydney is gearing up for a sizzling summer and we’re not just talking about the weather. There are oceans of fun to be had on the arts and culture front, and the Australian National Maritime Museum is where you’ll want to start. As part of the sea museum’s brand new Wonderwater program, you can explore and interact with more than 20 activities, events and exhibitions on, in and around the water, including underwater drone experiences, a shadow puppet play, and a huge free cultural festival. You can experience the best of Wonderwater with a See It All ticket, or members and children under four go free. Plan your trip around these four must-see arts and culture events.

What to see at Wonderwater

Go behind the scenes of Robert Connolly’s film Blueback (based on Time Winton’s novella) at this free and engaging new exhibition. You’ll discover how the movie’s life-sized blue groper puppet was brought to life, watch exclusive ‘making of’ footage, and see key objects from the film. You can also experience what it’d be like to be in the movie using the interactive greenscreen, and discover interesting facts about blue gropers (perfect for impressing guests at your next summer dinner party).

Immerse yourself in the spectacular sights, sounds and smells from around the world at this massive cultural celebration on Saturday, January 27 from 3-11pm. Now entering its eighth year, this family-friendly festival brings together more than 50 performers and artists from 20 cultures, including Filipino and Aboriginal musician Dobby, Meanjin-based artist Solchld and East African band Chikchika. Everyone is welcome to join this exciting and inclusive festival, presented by Settlement Services International in association with Sydney Festival, with the full program available here

Plunge beneath the surface of Sydney Harbour with the Maritime Museum’s newest underwater drone experience. You’ll take the wheel as captain on this interactive adventure and can challenge family and friends to see who’s the best underwater drone pilot. This exclusive summer experience is an add-on to the Wonderwater See It All ticket, with 30-minute sessions hosted every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from January 7-28 (except public holidays). Tickets also include a private workshop for up to four people with the Museum’s science educators and incredible underwater footage for you to take home and share. You can book a spot now.

You only have two chances to witness this remarkable shadow play by Indonesian-Australian artist Jumaadi and composer Michael Toisuta. This dream-like story of strange creatures and curious vessels is told in light and shadow, backed by powerful rhythms and soothing sounds of the ocean. The Sea is Still a Mystery is free to watch with any Wonderwater See It All ticket, including performances on January 27 and 28.
