There's something about the changing seasons that stirs up cravings for bold and comforting flavours. Warm up this winter with a sensory food tour of Chatswood’s bustling dining precincts. Whether you long for the fiery spice that ignites your senses, the tangy punch of sourness, the intriguing bitterness or the satisfying sweetness, Chatswood's dining scene has something for every palate.

Here’s where to get your sour, sweet, bitter and spicy fix:

Spicy: China Chilli

Spice up your winter with a lip-burning feast at China Chilli in Chatswood Interchange. From the chilli-infused oils to the traditional Chinese lanterns, you’ll be seeing red all around. Start your fiery Sichuan feast with sliced beef tripes and ox tongue in chilli sauce or fragrant steamed chicken with chilli sauce. The spicy lamb ribs are another must-try, coated with a unique aromatic combination of Sichuan chilli and pepper.

Sour: Spicy Joint

Don’t let the name fool you. While Spicy Joint delivers on the heat front, this popular Sichuan restaurant has also mastered the art of sour. Settle into a plush red booth with their signature fish fillet in sour pickled cabbage soup, black fungus with sour sauce, or fried peanuts pickled in vinegar. For the more adventurous, there are beef slices with hot and sour stock, jellyfish with vinegar and pepper, and sour plum juice to refresh your palate post-feed.

Bitter: Nana’s Green Tea

There is something highly addictive about matcha – its vibrant colour, high antioxidant levels, tender bitterness and aromatic sweet aftertaste. You can delight in the wonders of Japanese matcha at Australia’s first Nana’s Green Tea in Chatswood Interchange. From chilling frappes and parfaits to warming matcha lattes, hojicha (roasted green tea) and genmaicha (green tea with roasted rice), each sip and bite is a harmonious balance of sweet and bitter flavours. You’ll leave feeling bittersweet for seconds.

Sweet: Gondola Gelateria

It’s worth joining the queues for a sweet treat at Chatswood’s award-winning Gondola Gelateria. Made fresh each morning, you’ll be delighted with a mix of authentic and rare flavours ranging from Sicilian lemon and Italian hazelnut to boysenberry and lavender crumble; coffee and mascarpone; kumquat and ginger; and Lamington. Among the locals' favourites is Gondola's yogurt ciliegia, where the tangy sourness of cherry harmoniously balances with the sweet milky fragrance. For extra sweetness, enjoy your scoop with cookies, crepes and cannoli.
