This year marks the very first NSW Aboriginal Languages Week and as part of the celebrations, Museums of History NSW is hosting a fascinating First Nations Speaker Series. The free event invites audiences to listen to and engage with remarkable guest panellists who will discuss First Nations history, culture and issues affecting their communities today.
This upcoming edition, hosted at the Museum of Sydney, in partnership with the Aboriginal Languages Trust, is part of the greater First Nations Speaker Series, which has previously produced captivating discussions with contemporary authors, artists, curators, designers, and producers. On October 26, guest panellists including Barkaa and Andy Saunders will take the stage to discuss the importance of language in their work and their community. This will align with the Aboriginal Languages Week 2023 theme, ‘Language alive, culture thrives’.
Proud Malyangapa, Barkindji woman and ARIA nominated artist, Barkaa is passionate about celebrating her rich cultural heritage and using music to voice issues impacting First Nations people. Biripi man and comedian, Andy Saunders uses humour to break down barriers and stereotypes as well as provoke thought in any audience.
The First Nations Speaker Series is presented in collaboration with GML Heritage and the Research Centre for Deep History at the Australian National University. It is free to attend, but registrations are recommended here.
