Eamon Flack wants to socialise Sydney – through theatre. His first season at Belvoir rewrites Australia the way many of us would like it to be: inclusive, compassionate, self-aware. “The more we tell ourselves that economic growth is the only way to achieve social change, the more we let go of the real driving force [of social change], which is actually imaginative, emotional and non-economic. Idealism really matters.”
In the future Eamon hopes Sydney: “[Reflects] that the arts are for everyone and by everyone – not just the big end of town. The arts must be as diverse as the city. Death to homogeneity. Variety is life.”
