Bhenji Ra is a dancer and performance artist who has created works for the Asia-Pacific Triennale in Brisbane. Their otherworldly performances centre around hidden and marginalised communities, and often explore themes of race, sexuality and gender. This year, they will be heading to Vienna for a residency, before returning to Sydney to complete an ongoing project with Campbelltown Arts Centre.
In the future Bhenji hopes Sydney: “Gives more visibility to all its queer [tribes]. There’s such a rich diversity in Sydney, beyond the white, male Mardi Gras scene, whether you’re queer or not, and I think it’s really important for these groups to come through, and have a say in what gets seen and heard.”
