Lovers and supporters of the arts, rejoice! The Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) has just released the details of its 2022 season, and you won’t want to miss a minute of the curtain-raising action.

On the bill are five thrilling, joyful and raucous productions, starring some of the country’s most impressive young talent and supported by an esteemed line-up of directors, writers and choreographers.

Co-produced by Camp Sugar Productions, The Deb is a heartwarming and hilarious coming-of-age tale from the minds of Hannah Reilly (winner of the 2019 Rebel Wilson Comedy Commission) and Megan Washington (multi ARIA Award-winning musician). If you’re a fan of Muriel’s Wedding, this one’s for you.

M. Rock follows the adventures of 18-year-old Tracey, who heads off on a European jaunt and skips her flight home, only to be pursued by her grandmother, Mabel, who’s never ventured further than Canberra. Written by Lachlan Philpott and directed by Fraser Corfield, it’s a lovely story for both the young and young at heart.

The Resistance by Kip Chapman is a co-production with the Auckland Theatre Company, and explores the power of friendship in the arena of the climate justice movement, while A Clockwork Orange: A Play with Music is a modern reimagining of the provocative 1962 novella of the same name.

Finally, Past the Shallows by Favel Parrett and adapted by Julian Larnach is an ode to brotherhood that will stay with you long after the lights come up. Directed by Ben Winspear, co-produced with Archipelago Productions and featuring a powerhouse cast of three young actors, it’s a deeply poignant account of mortality and family secrets.

But that’s not the only exciting news: the upcoming 2022 season also marks the opening of the Rebel Theatre – a purpose-built, 196-seat playhouse named in honour of ATYP alumni, Rebel Wilson. Located at the company’s new home on Pier 2/3 in Dawes Point, it’s a place for Australia’s future leading actors, playwrights and directors to take centre stage.

Subscription packages are now on sale, or you can score single tickets from December 13. Purchase a five-play subscription by December 20 and you’ll receive a host of delightful subscriber benefits, plus go into the running to win two incredible prize packs.
