East meets West and Top Gun meets James Bond in this bilingual one-man show, SkyDuck, that brings the world’s most spoken language – Mandarin – to Parramatta’s Riverside Theatres from June 29 to July 1.

Written and performed by Sam Wang (Homebound 3.0, New Gold Mountain, Runaway Millionaires) in conjunction with a trans-Tasman production team, the tongue-in-cheek tale starts in 1993, when China’s Operation Skyduck sees super spies Captain Yan and Agent Yang sent to steal America’s prized flight simulation software. But their plans are thrown into chaos when they encounter hotshot Australian agent Commander Kendrick, who has plans of his own to take down the Chinese military.

Playing all seven characters, Wang will perform his Chinese heroes in Mandarin, with English surtitles. He’ll also be joined on stage by a blend of impressive lo-fi and high tech, including projection, puppets, musical numbers and handmade gadgets.

Wang studied film and law at UTS before training as an actor at Toi Whakaari Drama School in New Zealand. He and director Aileen Huynh developed SkyDuck with the help of Belvoir St Theatre’s 25A Program that supports emergent artists, its premiere season receiving acclaim as a hilarious new Australian show.

SkyDuck will be performed at Riverside Theatres from Thursday June 29 to Saturday July 1 with tickets starting at $42.
