Year after year, Sydney Fringe Festival captivates the city with a jaw-dropping and thought-provoking program of theatre, music, art and comedy. The next highly anticipated instalment of Made in Sydney will join the line-up for its third consecutive year in 2023, presenting three diverse shows by extraordinary homegrown talents. From the heartstring-tugging to the slightly alarming, this program has something for every appetite and you’ll want to get your game plan sorted early with only five exclusive nights of each show from September 5 to 9.
Starting with a laugh is always a win and the Australian premiere of Clockfire Theatre Company’s absurdist comedy Plenty of Fish in the Sea is sure to bring all the laughs. Created and performed by Emily Ayoub and Madeline Baghurst, this physically adventurous fable dives into the surreal world of online dating and promises to be a relatable hit for all ages.
If your humour takes a walk on the dark side, then Betty is a Butcher is the black comedy for you. This debut play, written and performed by Thomas Campbell and directed by Kate Gaul, follows five characters on their inevitable odyssey towards death. It’s silly, it’s sophisticated and it will leave you feeling unsettled in the best kind of way.
The plot gets thicker and even more diverse with writer, performer and co-producer Almitra Mavalvala’s autobiographical musical theatre and cabaret show, Blacklisted. Drawing musical inspiration from Queen, The Eagles and Hamilton, this heartwarming story takes you on a journey across borders from Pakistan to Sydney in Mavalvala’s quest for a sense of belonging.
Made in Sydney is a hand-picked showcase of some of the best locally made independent works and now’s your golden chance to see these three diverse works before they hit the global stage. Each show is on for a limited run from September 5 to 9 in Fringe’s vibiest new courtyard theatre bar, Pact, where you can soak in the post-show atmosphere with a warm, mulled beverage in hand.
Made in Sydney is proudly brought to you in collaboration with Create NSW and Young Henrys.
