Take a jump to the left, and then a step to right, put your hands on your hips and pull your knees in tight because a brand new Aussie production of one of the most outrageous musical megahits of all time is coming to Sydney.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, this blood-curdling new staging will feature an all-star cast led by Aussie icon Jason Donovan as the outrageous Frank N Furter, alongside Aussie radio legend Myf Warhurst as the Narrator.
This madcap parody of 1950s monster movie tropes tells the story of young lovebirds Brad and Janet, who are forced to seek help from a creepy castle when their car gets a flat tyre. Here, they fall into the kinky clutches of Frank N Furter and his curious cohort of freakish servants and lab-made monsters.
It was the retro-rock score and sensual liberation at the heart of this bizarre story that really pushed the boundaries when Rocky Horror first hit the stage in 1973. Since its low-budget birth five decades ago in a small experimental studio theatre in London's Sloane Square, the show has grown to be a global phenomenon, seen live by more than 30 million people worldwide and translated into more than 20 languages. Today it commands a devoted following, with fans often attending dressed as their favourite characters – expect to see a fair few stiletto heels and lacy garter belts once you enter the theatre foyer.
So why not take a Time Warp and find out why, half a century on, this sexy, sassy, surreal and spooky musical is still going from strength to strength? The show opens at the Theatre Royal on February 14 and you can find out more and buy tickets here.
