There are lots of great new places to eat at the new look, thoroughly modern Marrickville Metro
The new look, thoroughly modern Marrickville Metro launched its impressive new line-up of shops, boutiques and dining destinations in June 2021. The expansion has seen Marrickville Metro grow by 50 per cent and transform a former factory with exciting new retailers in food and drink, lifestyle and fresh food. Their commitment to community spirit has seen the installation of multiple unique artworks from local creatives across the venue, making Marrickville Metro a new cultural hub in the Inner West.
The new Marrickville Metro is home to all things delicious, beautifully designed and dedicated to local pride. After several months when some retailers were closed due to restrictions or only able to offer click-and-collect and takeaway, they are all open again to visitors. So come along and support some new shops that haven’t had an easy start – all in a Covid-safe environment.
A trip to Panetta Mercato is the grown-up equivalent of taking a kid to a candy store, but instead of Fizzers and red frogs, it’s all about the big open cheese fridge filled with every creamy, sharp, crumbly, blue and truffle-filled curd your heart could desire. And if being low on cured meats and olives, fresh fruit and imported condiments wasn’t reason enough to go fill a canvas shopping bag at the deli here, they’ve decided to add an onsite café to the mix.
The Inner West is famous for its craft beer breweries and is developing quite the reputation on the natural wine circuit too, so it’s no wonder independent bottle shop Liquor Emporium is stocking the shelves with a jaw-dropping 500 craft beers, plus organic and natural wines. And for those days when you want a social bevvie without the ABV, they’re also stocking non-alcoholic wines.
As we all become better acquainted with the damage from unregulated fishing practices on our oceans, many of us want to make better choices, which is where Astakos Fish Market comes in. This local fishmonger buys local, sustainable Australian produce, supporting local fisherpeople and communities and ensuring the products that hit your table are top notch in both flavour and good karma.
It seems everyone is a sourdough convert these days, so it’s lucky Shepherds Artisan Bakehouse has loaves of every shape, colour and texture to suit your carby needs. Is gluten not your friend? They have gluten-free cakes, bread, tarts and bars here too.
Green Valley Spices is a company with a 30-year history of supplying the best quality herbs and spices from Europe, Asia, the Mediterranean and South America. You 'll also find a world of nuts, vegan and gluten-free products, sweets, baked goods and other delicatessen delights.
The shelves of Hypmotive are where to go for quirky, handmade, locally designed and one-of-a-kind ceramics, illustrations, paintings, jewellery, accessories and fashion. Local artisans display their wares here and hold creative workshops like the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold.
Do you say ‘I love you’ with a floral bouquet or a house plant? Depends on the person, so grab yourself a coffee from the café at Rose & Co.ffee while you decide if natives or a zamioculcas zamiifolia says ‘welcome to the neighbourhood’ better at this combined florist, plant shop and café.
Did you also buy a lockdown puppy? You’re not alone. Just head to any Inner West park on a weekend and it’s a royal parade of furry friends. To keep your four-legged pal looking like the best in show (or to just get all those brambles they picked up in Sydney Park out of their fur), take them to Paws n Palms for dog grooming services and pet accessories.
There is something magical about browsing the shelves of a beautiful bookshop. The feeling of discovery when a cover grabs your attention; the reassuring weight of a printed tome in your hands; the joy of buying a gift you know someone will treasure. Harry Hartog’s bookshops are portals to discovery and inspiration, with that reassuring calm and familiarity that only a bookshop provides.
We all know fitness is a way of life for a lot of us Sydneysiders, which is why Bodyfit Marrickville Platinum is pulling out all the stops at their newest fitness centre. In addition to access to all their locations, you can attend unlimited group exercise classes if you’re the type of person who needs something fun and new to keep your cardio up.
