At the precise point where the university stretch of King Street gives way to the shops of Newtown sits a new café that is serving dessert for breakfast – and putting eggs on nearly everything.
Fly in the face of tradition and order the apple wedges in a cinnamon spiced batter with a pool of old-fashioned, hot toffee sauce. You have the rest of the day to manage your blood sugar – breakfast is the time to eat like a queen. Or if you just can't shake a savoury snack first thing, they do a toad in a hole, Aussie-style. An egg cooked inside a brioche bun comes with another fried egg on top and a bread cap soaked with melted butter and diced bacon pieces. Sorry, traditionalists – no sausage on this little number. They're using beans from Rush roasters in Bowral and the result is a smooth, caramelly shot that will gently shock your sloth brain back into action.
We're not saying we never patronised the Domino's that once inhabited this corner spot, but a bright, sunny café doing great coffee right near a university is going to get everyone's up vote. Ours included.
