If you want to secure a full serve of Giovanni Pilu’s famous free range, oven-roasted suckling pig, you’ll need $100 and a favoured dining companion with whom to share it. Or you could just order the suckling pig panino at the Kiosk, a casual little snack bar opened out the front of Pilu at Freshwater.
The menu is dominated by things on bread – egg and pancetta rolls, avocado on toast, fruit loaf with ricotta and honey – but you’ll have to wait until 11am for the suckling pig. Toasted slices of chewy Sonoma sourdough can barely contain the extraordinarily rich filling of tender chopped pork with mayonnaise to spare, wholegrain mustard, julienned red apple, celery, fennel and rocket. It’s $14.50 a go, which is a lot for a sandwich but a tiny fee compared to the fine dining alternative. And you get to eat it down on Freshwater Beach. Winner.
