Rojo Rocket was founded on the dream to bring a slice of the real Mexico to Australia. Part owners Ngaldi Lupercio and Adrian Reed teamed up with Ken West, owner of Big Day Out, and his partner Cathy Rechichi to create this Mexican restaurant and bar in a sky-blue, weatherboard house among lush garden surrounds. Parking is available but you may want to leave the car at home a trip a couple of Margaritas ($16). They have a 1976 Cadillac hearse that operates as a courtesy car to pick you up and drop you off for a donation per head service fee. There’s a strict no Tex-Mex policy here: order a round of tuna sashimi pieces in crisp tostada shells with avocado, creamy chipotle and a sweet, soy glaze ($13) or deep-fried jalapeños stuffed with beef mince and sultanas ($15). Finish things off with cinnamon-dusted churros ($15) with cajeta – Mexican dulce du leche – on the side.
