This hot-to-trot hole-in-the wall café adjoins a gallery but truth is, it’s out front where the real art is happening. Big chief barista James Humphreys had a decade in the hole bouncing between six Sydney cafés before striking out solo and today his machine is grunting out coffee that has CBD tongues wagging and nerve ends fizzing. Although Botany-roasted Golden Cobra LHLH (named for a 1994 song by Sydney punks Crow) is the house blend, you’re as likely to be offered an under the-counter bootleg like Ethiopian Lima or Harra or a blueberry-hued Monte Allegre from Brazil. Contraband coffee? Or best connected café in town? Think Klink.
