If you’ve been around Freshie Village this summer (we sure have – it’s home to our fave Sydney beach, after all), you may have noticed red-and-gold lanterns gently swaying in between lush palm trees. That’s because there’s a new kid on the block. Say hello to Harry Gatos, a pan-Asian bar and restaurant from the Stowaway team.
Here, the team will be serving up their take on Asian classics. On the snack line-up, there’s Devon’s outback prawn toast, Davidson's plum barbecue pork buns, and Peking duck spring rolls. Harry Gatos fried rice, mie goreng, black pepper yuzu chicken and double chin’s prawn curry make up the mains.
Harry’s Lager, Grifter and Stone & Wood are on tap, alongside bottled Bintang, Tsingtao, Kirin and more. If you’re a fan of Stowaway's Margs (hi, it's us), go for the Margato – a riff on the classic with coconut-washed tequila, cucumber, bergamot, lime and a coconut-citrus salt.
Manager Kris Hegarty said: “We’re communal dining enthusiasts. We’re hell-bent on flavour. And yeah, we’ve got loud table manners. We designed the large tables so people can catch up or join a mate as they’re passing by.”
“It’s funny. We took a Chinese restaurant and turned it into a bar with Stowaway. Then we took a bar and turned it into a Chinese restaurant with Harry Gatos,” Hegarty added.
Happy hour runs 5-6pm on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; 3-5pm on Friday; and noon-3pm on weekends. Snap up schooners for $6, as well as house wines and spirits, and $12 cocktails.
The beers are cold, a tiger mural adorns the walls, the woks are fired up, and the outside tables are ready. Noodles, here we come.
