As the sun sets on the time of the sandwich bar, a new lunchtime hero emerges to high praise and extensive queues; the poke bar. Fishbowl in Bondi is tucked just off the main drag in a new arcade, but you’ll be able to pick it from the line of impossibly tanned, lithe figures snaking out the door. They’re waiting patiently to construct their very own poke bowl. What is poke? It’s a raw fish salad from Hawaii that has found it’s natural Southern Hemisphere home in Bondi. How it works at Fishbowl is you choose your base – cabbage, brown rice, glass noodles – and your preferred protein, be it cubes of raw salmon, tuna, kingfish, or tofu for our vego pals. Then, like any salad bar, you build from there with things like pickled ginger, green chilli, herbs, bulkier veggies or seaweed. You also get a choice of dressing and a crunchy item to provide a little extra texture to your bowl. They assume you want the larger size unless you specify, and it’s a big serving so bring a mighty hunger or go for the small. Also, a scoop of avo on top will cost you extra. It’s a pretty quick process, even with the queue, so once you’re done traipse over the street and eat by the beach.
