Sydney desserterie Demochi specialises in only one thing: a love-child which crosses mochi, or sweet Japanese rice balls, with a doughnut, resulting in Sydney's first (and only) mochi doughnut.
Situated in the Strand Arcade in Croydon, Demochi's creations draw together the lightness of a doughnut and the chewiness of mochi, through incorporating traditional Japanese rice flour (the main ingredient for mochi) into donut batter, as well as flavour inspirations from both dessert traditions.
Owners Dennis and Monique Chan first started trying to recreate the sweet, chewy dessert they tasted at a Japanese bakery on holiday in Tokyo, and opened up Demochi in April, 2019.

While standard flavours like the original glazed, cinnamon, green tea and strawberry are best-sellers, each week also yields a new special the likes of which extend far beyond the usual: think pavlova, Vietnamese iced coffee, cookies and cream with oreo crumble, and black sesame seed flavoured doughnuts. Each doughnut is $5, and you can pick up a whole box of four for $20. There are also dipping sauces to choose from, with regulars like butterscotch and chocolate, as well as green tea whipped cream and Thai milk tea flavours ($2 each).
Currently, the store is open only for pick-up of online orders – simply place your order online and collect it on Saturday of the same week between 5.30-8.30pm at the Croydon pop up store in the Strand Arcade. Order online.
