There's some hot competition for the title of most beloved chicken shop in Sydney: you've got your charcoal masters like El Jannah and Frangos, the spice sadists like Belles Hot Chicken and the fried tender purveyors like Dirty Bird. Local chain Chargrill Charlie's has been in the chicken game for a while – and it's amassed a cult following of its own through its 16 stores spread across Sydney and Melbourne.
Now, it's taking it back to where it all began by setting up a beachside store in Coogee, back where it first opened over 30 years ago. To mark the occasion, Charlie's is turning the clock back to 1989 (not the Taylor Swift album, but there's a soundtrack for launch day) and turning the rices back to match. On opening weekend, Saturday, November 28 to Sunday, November 29, Charlie’s will be hitting rewind on the store’s original prices from 1989. The throwback menu will include an extra-large chicken for $10.90; a half chook for $5.90, a quarter for $3.90, as well as chicken and chip packs – the ideal pick-me-up after a lazy day of sun-lounging and swimming.
Plus, Charlie's will be giving away a whole bunch of retro-themed merch – '80s-inspired accessories, fluro-printed tees, water bottles and signature Charlie’s caps – totally for free. Swing by and listen to the DJ spin tunes and load up on some very inexpensive chicken from 9am on November 28.
