The Harbour City is not short on killer Cantonese cuisine, but it was a sad day when we waved goodbye to Tim Ho Wan – once the world’s cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant, which opened a handful of Sydney outposts – back in 2018.
Fortunately, knockout baked barbecue pork buns and other pillars of dim sum (siu mai, har gao, pork ribs, radish cakes) live on at the site of the former Tim Ho Wan flagship on George Street, which is now home to Canton! Canton! The slick, moodily lit 80-seater takes design cues from industrial pre-war China, kitted out with metres of exposed brick, opulent lanterns and banquettes inspired by opium den beds.
The extensive menu plays the hits, commencing with dumplings and capping off with sesame balls and Malay sponge cake. In between, expect to find all manner of roasted meats like duck and char siu pork, wok-fried vegetables, noodles, rice and an array of fragrant congees.
