Named for the year in which Indonesia claimed independence from the Netherlands, 1945 has a specialty in the grand rijsttafel (Dutch for 'rice table') – a range of skewered meats, fried squid, grilled prawns and prawn crackers. It's served on banana leaves with rice, cooked either in coconut milk and lemongrass (nasi oedoek) or in chicken stock spiced with turmeric (nasi koening). The Pyrmont restaurant is all about snacking, drinking (their roedjak air juice of grated exotic fruits is ace) and good times, right up to the climax: a shaved ice dessert replete with fluoro green jelly 'worms'.
