Sydney is going through a five-star luxury accommodation boom, with the opening of the Darling Harbour Sofitel earlier this year, the under-construction W Hotel, also in Darling Harbour, opening in 2020 and the Crown Resort, set to dominate the CBD skyline, opening in Barangaroo in 2021.
Today, yet another major addition to Sydney's hotel offering has been announced. The Ace Hotel – one of the world’s most revered hotel brands – will open its first Australian establishment in Surry Hills in 2021. The Ace Hotel is internationally synonymous with high-end luxury, paired with a distinctive boutique spirit. Boasting des-res locations in New York, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Chicago, Seattle, Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Portland, this American-born franchise has begun a global expansion, with the opening of a hotel in London’s trendy Shoreditch, and soon, a second international location in Japan’s Kyoto.
The hotel opening in Surry Hills will be Ace’s third outside the US and its first in the Southern Hemisphere. The 18-storey, purpose-built development will be situated on Wentworth Avenue, rising from the preserved façade of Tyne House. It will feature 264 rooms, as well as a ground floor lobby bar, a restaurant and café, and a rooftop bar and restaurant.
While the brand may be an import, Ace will still be using local designers (coordinated by Atelier Ace, the hotel’s in-house creative and development team) to ensure the interiors, eateries and the all-important rooftop venues resonate with Sydneysiders.
