The summer holidays are fast approaching, and although the Christmas break is an incredibly fun time to be in Sydney (you'll find our guide to the best things to do between Christmas and New Years Eve here), there's also a lot to be said for hitting the road and exploring our stunning state of NSW.
For insights on some of the best road trips in the state, we spoke with a man responsible for a lot of magical NSW holiday memories – the CEO of Reflections Holidays, Nick Baker. To help Sydneysiders make the most of their road trips this summer, Baker has shared his favourite road trips in the state, and a few top tips on how to stay smooth sailing on the road.

The summer holidays are the perfect time to hit the road with your friends, family, or even on your own. Here in Australia, and particularly in New South Wales, we’re spoiled for choice with incredible places to visit. This summer, rather than sticking solely to the highway, why not take the opportunity to plan a few extra days and visit some hidden gems along the way?
With cost-of-living pressures front of mind, the old-school Aussie road trip provides a great holiday option if you are looking to get out of town but don’t want to overspend. Packing up the car and escaping into nature to disconnect and explore forgotten areas of beauty on our doorstep can be just the getaway you need.
I'd recommend stretching your journey a little further by stopping off at various spots along your route...
1. NSW Far North Coast Road Trip
Total drive: 1 hr, 25 mins
Start: Yamba
Finish: Brunswick Heads
This road trip is ideal for those wanting to explore some of Australia’s most iconic beaches, rainforests and national parks. Starting in Yamba, head towards Evans Head, taking in the beautiful coastal route. Along the way, stop in the charming towns of Woodburn, Coraki, Wardell and Ballina. Known for their water sports, parks and easy access to other towns, these spots are perfect for a laid-back road trip with plenty to explore.
2. NSW Coffs Coast Road Trip
Total drive: 2 hrs, 30 mins
Start: Macksville
Finish: Red Rock
Starting at Macksville, a quaint town with plenty of boutiques, galleries, and cafés, this route takes you through Nambucca Heads, Coffs Harbour and Red Rock. With pristine beaches along the way, you may even find your next holiday destination. Make sure to stop by Nambucca Heads, a beautiful seaside town, and wander around its beaches and parks. Around 30 minutes away you will also find Scotts Head (a personal favourite), which has fantastic beaches for surfing.
3. NSW South Coast Road Trip
Total drive: 6 hrs, 48 mins
Start: Sydney
Finish: Eden
As you head out of the city, be sure to make a detour to Berkeley if you have the time, where you’ll get to enjoy rolling green hills in the Southern Highlands, before reaching the picturesque coastal town of Batemans Bay. Further south, Eden is a must-see, offering whale-watching tours, fishing activities, and the ever-popular Oyster Festival in October. If you have time, check out the Murray River – Australia’s longest river.
4. NSW Country/Outback Road Trip
For those seeking a true adventure, the NSW Outback is filled with fascinating history and unique landscapes. Start your journey at Burrinjuck Waters State Park, perfect for a few days of fishing and boating, before heading to Kangaroo Valley, known for its horse riding, hiking and kayaking. Next you could drop into visit Hill End, a historic gold mining town brimming with cultural experiences. Finish off your trip at Copeton Waters, a prime spot for camping, fishing and water activities.
To make the most of road tripping this summer, it is important to be prepared, so ensure you book accommodation ahead of time if you are travelling during the peak season and pack plenty of snacks, water and sunscreen.
