The fact that Sydney’s population is on the up is no surprise, with new housing developments being announced every few weeks, new roads and transport systems being built to meet the demand, and a whole new CBD emerging in Sydney’s West. Now, we can put a figure to the growth we’re seeing in the Harbour City, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) releasing population data for the year 2023-2024. According to the figures, Sydney’s population has reached an all-time high, with the Harbour City now home to 5,557,233 people (and counting).

Collectively, Australia’s capitals grew by 427,800 people in 2023-2024, with Melbourne seeing the largest increase (142,600 people) and Perth experiencing the highest proportional growth rate (3.1 per cent). Despite a high growth rate in Australia’s other capital cities, Sydney still takes the crown as the most populated city in the country, with our population growing by two per cent (107,538 people) from 2022-2023 to 2023-2024, to a total of 5,557,233 people. Regional Australia has also experienced significant population growth in the past 12 months, with the population of regional Australia increasing by 113,800 (1.3 per cent).

Although Australia’s population has grown across the board, certain spots have experienced more of a boom than others, with the Box Hill - Nelson area in Sydney’s outer north-west ranking as the third fastest-growing region in the country, growing by 22 per cent in just 12 months.

According to World Population Review, Sydney’s population has grown by more than 3 million in the past 75 years, rising from just over 1.6 million in 1950 to almost 6 million.
