Today, AMP Capital announced Marrickville Metro’s overdue facelift will include a new dining precinct with outdoor restaurants, as well as a major new ‘black label’ concept version of Coles.

The shopping arcade, which opened in 1987, is getting its biggest upgrade to date – expanding from regular old Woolies, Aldi, Kmart and 109 other stores to include an ‘upcycled’ food and drink area inside the disused industrial warehouse next door.

Marrickville Metro’s new look is already underway; work began on January 21, and they’re planning to complete the 33,000sqm development by September 2020.

You can still shop at the Metro, which is trading as normal throughout the development. And they’re keeping brands Woolworths and Aldi alongside 44 new retail outlets. We don’t yet know who’ll be taking up shop in the new dining area, but they say it’ll be focused on Australia’s best produce and providers.

The new work is designed to accommodate the huge population growth of the area. In Marrickville alone, there are 27,000 new home developments or redevelopments underway and the trade area population is forecast to reach 440,000 by 2021.

AMP Capital has promised to work with local artists and business owners to create a space that truly reflects the diversity of Sydney’s Inner West – especially within the new warehouse space. They’re planning to keep the existing warehouse façade, for example, extending south between Smidmore Street and Edinburgh Road.

Find out more about the development of Marrickville Metro, which you’ll find at 13-55 Marrickville Road.
