You’ve got one year left to skate around longstanding Sydney attraction, Macquarie Ice Rink, to Top 40 hits because the 39-year-old ice rink is closing permanently from early 2020.
As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, the rink's closure will make way for a billion-dollar redevelopment of Macquarie Shopping Centre by AMP Capital.
The ice rink’s lease is due to end on January 31, 2020, and Sydneysiders have taken to Twitter to post their anguish, as well as nostalgic stories, in response to the news.
Eleven thousand supporters have signed a Change.org petition to Save Macquarie Ice Rink. Ryde mayor Jerome Laxale has also launched a petition, as has member for Ryde Victor Dominello, who says, “Growing up in Ryde, I spent many weekends and evenings ice skating with friends and family. Recently, I joined with Sydney Bears and Sydney Ice Dogs as they welcomed Macquarie Ice Rink as their new home, and joined Royal Rehab Ryde for their All Abilities Christmas Winter Disco.”
Macquarie Ice Rink underwent renovations in late 2018, which makes this news even more baffling. The new surface is ready to rock, so if you’re planning on a summer skate to show your support the ice rink is still open for business. Go on Sundays for all day skating open to the public.
