Stargazers and lunar lovers, this one’s for you. If you missed out on catching sight of the super rare comet that lit up the sky above Sydney back in January, we’ve got good news. Tonight (Friday, March 14), there's more celestial excitement in store, with a blood moon rising (also known as a partial eclipse). Sydneysiders will be treated to a special sight very soon, as the moon will partially eclipse and glow red for a dramatic moment.
So, if you're keen to catch a glimpse of this unusual event, read on for everything you need to know.
When is the blood moon visible in Sydney?
The blood moon will appear tonight (Friday, March 14), lasting for around 80 minutes. It will rise at approximately 7.40pm and reach its peak just a couple of minutes later, lasting for another five minutes. You can expect to see a reddish shadow spreading across the moon, which occurs as the Earth moves across the sun’s path. Afterwards, the moon’s red shade will begin to fade into its normal bright glow. This coincides with the full moon for March (known as the 'worm moon'), so it should make for quite a sight. You can find exact details of when the blood moon will be visible on TimeAndDate.com.
How to see the blood moon in Sydney?
The best way to see the partial eclipse is to find a high point with a view of the horizon or an unobstructed area with free sight to the east. Ideally, this is also a dark place away from artificial light, so you can witness the full glow.
What is a blood moon?
A blood moon happens due to a lunar eclipse, when the Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon, blocking all direct sunlight. However, the moon takes on an eerie reddish colour because some sunlight still reaches it indirectly, via the Earth’s atmosphere.
When is the next lunar eclipse in Sydney?
If you miss catching the eclipse this time around, don't fret. A total lunar eclipse will be taking place on September 8, which will also make for a spectacular skyward sight.
