Among the key trends that have defined Sydney in 2024, bathhouses are undeniably one of them. This year alone, we’ve seen a super-affordable social sauna open in Bondi Junction, and a sprawling subterranean spa/sauna/steam room open just steps from the beach. Further in-land, plans have been revealed for One Playground’s Urban Oasis, which will open in a Surry Hills warehouse this month, and Soak Bathhouse confirmed plans to open a 700-square-metre space in Alexandria. Now, Melbourne favourite Sense of Self has announced that they’ll be opening up their hotly anticipated second outpost right here in Sydney – and it's set to open in 2025.
Set to be Sydney’s most spacious indoor bathhouse, Sense Of Self Sydney will occupy a 1,000-square-metre former warehouse on the Paddington/Surry Hills border. The cavernous, earthy-toned space will feature multiple large mineral pools heated to 39 degrees, spacious 80-degree saunas, a Hammam steam room heated to 46 degrees, and a series of cold plunge pools sitting at between ten and 12 degrees. We can also expect dedicated treatment rooms, comfy relaxation spaces, and a gloriously well-stocked gift store.
True to their roots, the Victorian-born brand tasked Melbourne architecture firm Ritz & Ghougassian with designing the space, which is set to include textured surfaces, exposed brickwork and expansive spaces of light and dark.
"Bathhouses are so much more than the sum of their parts," says Sense Of Self Founder and Director Freya Berwick. "They serve different functions for different people; from recovery bathing through to social connection and body acceptance, and we love catering to all of those needs.” Keen to be among the first to experience Sense of Self Sydney?
