Sydney’s transport system is getting a glow-up, with the super-speedy Sydney Metro network expanding across the city, set to comprise 46 stations once it’s complete. And while it’s set to reduce journey times once it’s open, the extension of Sydney's transport network doesn’t come without its challenges. Back in September, the Bankstown to Sydneyham train line closed to allow the line to be adapted to accommodate metro trains, and extend the existing stretch of Sydney Metro that currently connects Tallawong to Sydenham. Now, another stretch of train line is (temporarily) closing, with the T6 Lidcombe and Bankstown Line set to be closed for nine weeks from late April. Here’s what we know so far.

According to Transport for NSW, the T6 Lidcombe and Bankstown Line will be closed for nine full weeks, from April 27 until June 29 2025. Not sure what that means for you? The stations affected are just those on the T6 Lidcombe and Bankstown Line: Yagoona, Birrong and Bankstown. If you’re travelling along the Lidcombe line past Regents Park, you’ll keep on sailing, it’s just the short offshoot line that’s affected. During the nine-week period, free-to-use bus services will run, with the 8T6 stopping at all stations between Bankstown and Lidcombe, and the 8AT6 running an express service between Bankstown and Lidcombe.

Unlike the stretch of train line between Sydenham and Bankstown, the Lidcombe and Bankstown Line isn’t being converted into a metro line, but upgrades are being made to “future-proof” the platforms and line. The upgrades include enabling the line to carry eight-car trains (currently only the smaller four-car trains can run along the line) and extending the platforms at Bankstown station.

Southwest Link bus services – the free bus services set to run until the Bankstown to Sydenham metro conversion is complete – will continue to operate as normal. You can learn more and plan your trip over here.
