The AACTA Awards, Australia's answer to the Oscars, are not until December, but they've already announced the nominees in two categories: Best Short Fiction Film and Best Short Animation.
The nominees will be screening in August at a new event titled AACTA Shorts Fest.
So who's nominated? For Best Short Fiction Film it's:
- 'All These Creatures', which won Charles Williams the Palme D’Or in Cannes
- 'Judas Collar', which had its world premiere earlier this year at Sydney Film Festival
- 'Nursery Rhymes', which won the Sydney Film Festival 2018 Rouben Mamoulian Best Director Award
- 'Tangles and Knots', starring Odessa Young and Leeanna Walsmann
The nominees for Best Short Animation are:
- 'Irony' by Radheya Jegatheva, which has won 66 Awards and been selected for 156 film festivals worldwide
- 'Lost and Found', the Sydney Film Festival’s 2018 Yoram Gross Animation Award winner
- 'Monster's Playground', a clay animation narrated by Claudia Karvan
- 'Peepin'', by University of Technology Sydney students Haein Kim and Paul Rhodes
Here's the catch: to attend AACTA Shorts Fest you have to be member of AACTA. But if you are a member you get to see all the AACTA nominated films (including features) for free.
